A Rare Case in Pediatric Surgery: Insights from Assistant Prof. Dr. Risto Simeonov
In the world of pediatric surgery, rare and complex cases challenge not
only medical expertise but also innovation, precision, and dedication. One such
example comes from Assistant
Prof. Dr. Risto Simeonov, a distinguished pediatric surgeon from
Macedonia, whose work has left an indelible mark on the field.
A Remarkable Career in
Pediatric Surgery
Born in 1972 in Skopje, Macedonia, Dr. Simeonov’s journey in medicine
began at the Faculty of Medicine, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in
Skopje, where he graduated in 1997. His passion for pediatric surgery led
him to start his residency at the PHI University Clinic of Pediatric Surgery,
where in 2004, he became a specialist in pediatric surgery.
In 2009, Dr. Simeonov achieved a historic milestone in his country —
performing the first pediatric kidney transplantation in Macedonia, a
testament to his surgical skill and pioneering spirit. His career then expanded
into academic and clinical leadership roles, including his current position as Assistant
Professor of General and Pediatric Surgery at the Faculty of Medical
Sciences, Goce Delcev University – Shtip.
In 2018, his professional journey took him to Private Health
Institution “Acibadem Sistina” Clinical Hospital, where he now serves as Chief
of the Pediatric Surgery Department. The same year, he successfully
defended his doctoral thesis, further solidifying his role as a leading
academic and clinician.
With over 30 published abstracts, numerous scientific articles, and
co-authorship of several student textbooks, Dr. Simeonov continues to shape
the future of pediatric surgery through research, education, and mentorship.
The Case: Double Atresia
in a Newborn
At the upcoming conference, Dr. Simeonov will present his poster titled:
“A Rare Case Report of a Newborn with Double Atresia, Esophageal with Distal
Fistula Followed by Anal Atresia.”
Double atresia is an exceptionally rare congenital condition where two
separate parts of the gastrointestinal tract are blocked or absent — in this
case, the esophagus (with a distal fistula) and the anal canal. Such cases
present significant challenges in diagnosis, surgical planning, and
post-operative care.
Dr. Simeonov’s report offers deep insights into:
- The complex surgical
approach required for treating both anomalies.
- The critical timing of
interventions to ensure survival and recovery.
- Postoperative outcomes and long-term monitoring
strategies for affected newborns.
This presentation is expected to contribute valuable knowledge to the
pediatric surgical community, especially in managing rare and high-risk
congenital conditions.
Commitment to Advancing
Pediatric Surgery
Dr.
Risto Simeonov’s career reflects a rare combination of clinical
excellence, academic leadership, and surgical innovation. From breaking new
ground with Macedonia’s first pediatric kidney transplant to tackling highly
complex congenital anomalies, he exemplifies the dedication and skill needed to
advance pediatric healthcare.
His work not only benefits his patients but also inspires the next
generation of surgeons and medical researchers. The upcoming presentation of
this rare double atresia case will undoubtedly provide an important reference
point for pediatric surgeons worldwide.
